The city of Mindelo has about 62.970 inhabitants (mindelenses). Mindelo is capital S. Vicente the second largest city in Cape Verde. The city of Mindelo has a total surface area of 67km2 in northwest part of the island of S. Vicente, on the Bay of Porto Grande, a natural bay formed by a crater of a submarine volcano with a diameter of 4 km. O Islet of the Birds (Ilheu dos Pássaros), with an altitude of 82m, has a small lighthouse indicating the extremity of the crater.
